Arthroscopy
Keyhole joint surgery used mainly for the knee, shoulder, hip and ankle to diagnose and treat problems such as cartilage tears, loose bodies and impingement. Small incisions and a camera allow precise repair with less soft-tissue damage than open surgery, so recovery is usually quicker. Most patients go home the same day and follow a targeted rehabilitation plan.
Arthroscopy explained
Arthroscopy is keyhole joint surgery that lets the surgeon diagnose and treat joint problems through tiny incisions.
What is arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy is minimally invasive surgery in which a small camera (arthroscope) and fine instruments are inserted through tiny incisions to inspect and treat the inside of a joint, most often the knee, shoulder, hip or ankle. Because the incisions are small, recovery is often quicker than open surgery.
Is it right for me?
It may suit people with certain joint problems, such as cartilage, ligament or soft-tissue issues, that need diagnosis or repair. Your surgeon reviews your imaging and symptoms and confirms whether arthroscopy is the right approach for your joint.
How it's done, step by step
- 1
Assessment: imaging, examination and planning.
- 2
Anaesthetic: general, spinal or local with sedation, decided with your team.
- 3
Keyhole access: tiny incisions are made for the camera and instruments.
- 4
Diagnosis & repair: the surgeon inspects and treats the joint as needed.
- 5
Closure & rehab: the small incisions are closed and physiotherapy is planned.
What you'll experience
It's often a day-case or short-stay procedure with small incisions. Your consultant arranges the visit, rehabilitation and follow-up, and supports you in your language.
Recovery & results timeline
Recovery is usually quicker than open surgery, though it depends on what's treated. You'll follow a physiotherapy plan to restore strength and movement, with your team guiding a gradual return to activity.
