DHI

DHI uses a specialised Choi pen to implant hair follicles directly into the scalp without first creating channels. DHI places each graft directly into the scalp with a precision implanter pen, giving the surgeon fine control over angle, depth and density.

What is DHI?

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a refinement of FUE. Instead of opening channels first and placing grafts afterwards, the surgeon loads each follicle into a fine, pen-like implanter (often called a Choi pen) that creates the channel and sets the graft in one motion. This gives close control over the direction and density of each hair.

Is it right for me?

DHI is often chosen for the hairline and for adding density between existing hairs, and it can sometimes be done without fully shaving the recipient area. At your consultation the surgeon advises whether DHI or standard FUE suits your hair type, the area to cover and your goals.

How it's done, step by step

    Consultation and design: the surgeon plans a natural hairline and graft number with you.

    Preparation: the donor area is trimmed and local anaesthetic is applied for comfort.

    Extraction: individual grafts are harvested one by one from the donor area.

    Implantation: each graft is loaded into an implanter pen and placed directly at the chosen angle and depth.

    Finish: the area is cleaned and you receive your aftercare plan.

What you'll experience

DHI is a single-day procedure carried out under local anaesthetic, usually over several hours depending on the number of grafts. You stay awake and comfortable, and your consultant keeps in touch in your language throughout.

Recovery and results timeline

Small scabs settle over about two weeks, with short-term limits on exercise, swimming and sun. Implanted hairs shed first, which is expected, then regrow, with early results from around 3 to 4 months and the fuller outcome over roughly a year.
