Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy
Removal of the tonsils and, when needed, the adenoids is used mainly for repeated throat infections, obstructive sleep-related breathing problems or enlarged adenoids in children. It is performed through the mouth under general anaesthetic. A sore throat lasting one to two weeks is common during recovery.
Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy explained
Removal of the tonsils and/or adenoids treats repeated throat infections, obstructed breathing and sleep problems caused by enlarged tissue.
What are these procedures?
Tonsillectomy removes the tonsils at the back of the throat; adenoidectomy removes the adenoid tissue behind the nose. They are often combined in children and can be done separately in adults. Both are carried out through the mouth, with no external cuts.
Is it right for me or my child?
They are considered for repeated tonsillitis, obstructive sleep apnoea, loud snoring, mouth breathing or persistent ear or nose issues linked to enlarged adenoids. The ENT surgeon reviews the history and examines the throat and nose before recommending surgery.
How it's done, step by step
- 1
ENT consultation and pre-operative checks.
- 2
General anaesthetic in an accredited hospital.
- 3
The tonsils and/or adenoids are removed through the open mouth.
- 4
Bleeding points are sealed with careful technique.
- 5
Recovery in the ward with pain relief, fluids and observation.
What you'll experience
It is usually a day case or a single overnight stay. Your package includes the pre-op assessment, hospital and surgeon fees, hotel, transfers and interpreter support during every appointment.
Recovery & results timeline
A sore throat, ear-referred pain and reduced appetite are common for one to two weeks; soft cool foods and prescribed pain relief help. Most people return to normal activities in about two weeks, with breathing and sleep improving as healing completes.
