Septoplasty

Septoplasty straightens a deviated nasal septum to improve breathing through the nose. It is performed through the nostrils under general anaesthetic, without visible scars. Most people return to light activity within about a week, with breathing improving gradually as swelling settles.

Septoplasty explained

Septoplasty straightens a deviated nasal septum to open the airway and make breathing through the nose easier.

What is septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a functional procedure that repositions the cartilage and bone dividing the two sides of the nose so air can flow freely on both sides. It is performed from inside the nostrils, so there are no visible scars, and it does not change the outward shape of the nose.

Is it right for me?

It suits adults with a clearly deviated septum causing blocked breathing, snoring, recurrent sinus issues or disturbed sleep, when sprays and other measures have not helped. Your ENT surgeon confirms the diagnosis with an examination and, when needed, a CT scan.

How it's done, step by step

  1. 1

Consultation with the ENT surgeon, nasal endoscopy and any imaging.

  2. 2

General or local anaesthetic with sedation, decided with your surgeon.

  3. 3

The surgeon works entirely through the nostrils and lifts the lining of the septum.

  4. 4

The deviated cartilage and bone are reshaped or trimmed to straighten the septum.

  5. 5

The lining is repositioned; soft internal splints or dissolvable packing may be used briefly.

What you'll experience

Septoplasty is usually a day case or single overnight stay in an accredited hospital. Your consultant coordinates transfers, hotel and aftercare in your language, and arranges the follow-up check before you fly home.

Recovery & results timeline

You can expect nasal congestion and mild discomfort for the first week as the inside of the nose heals. Breathing usually improves noticeably over the following weeks, with the full benefit felt after a few months once swelling settles.
