Hearing Implants (incl. Cochlear Implants)

Hearing implants, including cochlear implants, are considered for severe to profound hearing loss when standard hearing aids are not enough. The device is placed under general anaesthetic and activated a few weeks later, followed by structured rehabilitation with an audiologist. Suitability is confirmed after full hearing and imaging assessment.

Hearing Implants (incl. Cochlear Implants) explained

Hearing implants, including cochlear implants, restore useful hearing for people whose hearing loss is too severe for standard hearing aids.

What are hearing implants?

A hearing implant is a small device partly placed under the skin behind the ear and partly worn externally. It bypasses damaged parts of the hearing system and stimulates the hearing nerve directly, giving access to sound when hearing aids are no longer enough.

Is it right for me?

Implants are considered for children and adults with severe to profound hearing loss in one or both ears, when hearing aids provide limited benefit. A full audiology assessment, imaging and specialist review confirm whether an implant is suitable and which type fits best.

How it's done, step by step

  1. 1

Detailed audiology tests, imaging of the ear and consultation with the surgeon.

  2. 2

Surgery under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital.

  3. 3

A small area of hair behind the ear is shaved and a discreet incision is made.

  4. 4

The internal part of the implant is placed under the skin and the electrode is inserted into the cochlea.

  5. 5

The incision is closed; the external sound processor is fitted and activated a few weeks later.

What you'll experience

The operation typically takes two to three hours and is followed by a short hospital stay. Your package covers the pre-op assessment, hospital fees, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, hotel, transfers and interpretation for every appointment.

Recovery & results timeline

The wound heals over about two weeks. The processor is fitted and tuned around four to six weeks after surgery, and hearing rehabilitation continues over the following months as the brain learns to use the new sound signals.
