Ear Tube Insertion

Ventilation tubes (grommets) are placed in the eardrum to drain persistent middle-ear fluid and reduce repeated ear infections, most often in children. The short procedure is done under general anaesthetic and usually takes only a few minutes per ear. Hearing tends to improve quickly and the tubes fall out on their own over time.

Ear Tube Insertion explained

Ear tube insertion drains fluid from behind the eardrum to restore hearing and reduce ear infections, most often in children with glue ear.

What is ear tube insertion?

A tiny ventilation tube (grommet) is placed through the eardrum to allow air into the middle ear and let trapped fluid drain. It is a very quick, standard ENT procedure and the tubes usually fall out on their own after several months.

Is it right for me or my child?

It is considered for persistent middle-ear fluid causing hearing loss, delayed speech or repeated ear infections. The ENT surgeon confirms the diagnosis with an ear examination and hearing test before recommending tubes.

How it's done, step by step

  1. 1

ENT consultation, ear examination and hearing test.

  2. 2

Short general anaesthetic for children, or local anaesthetic in cooperative adults.

  3. 3

A small opening is made in the eardrum with a fine instrument.

  4. 4

Fluid behind the eardrum is gently suctioned out.

  5. 5

The tiny tube is placed through the opening to keep the middle ear ventilated.

What you'll experience

The procedure takes only a few minutes per ear and is done as a day case. Your package covers the pre-op assessment, hospital and surgeon fees, hotel, transfers and interpreter support.

Recovery & results timeline

Most people go home the same day and return to normal activity within a day or two. Hearing often improves straight away as the fluid clears. The surgeon advises on keeping ears dry and arranges a follow-up check.
