TAVI

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) replaces a narrowed aortic valve without open-heart surgery, using a catheter passed through the groin or another small access. Typically offered to patients at intermediate to high surgical risk. Recovery is generally faster than open surgery.

TAVI explained

TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) replaces a diseased aortic valve using a catheter, without opening the chest.

What it is

A new valve mounted on a stent is delivered via catheter, usually through the femoral artery, and expanded within the diseased native valve. The heart continues to beat throughout.

Is it right for me?

TAVI is typically offered for symptomatic severe aortic stenosis in patients at intermediate to high surgical risk. A heart team assesses your imaging, valve anatomy and overall health.

How it's done

    CT imaging maps the valve and access route.

    Under sedation or general anaesthesia, a catheter is advanced to the heart.

  3. 3

    The new valve is positioned inside the diseased valve and deployed.

  4. 4

    The catheter is removed and the entry site is closed.

Recovery and follow-up

Hospital stay is often just a few days. Recovery is usually quicker than open valve surgery. Your consultant coordinates follow-up, translation and support.
