Coronary Bypass (CABG)
Open-heart surgery that grafts healthy vessels around blocked coronary arteries to restore blood flow to the heart muscle. Typically recommended for multi-vessel disease. Recovery includes structured cardiac rehabilitation.
Coronary Bypass (CABG) explained
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) restores blood flow to the heart muscle by bypassing narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.
What it is
The surgeon uses vessels from the chest, arm or leg to create new routes for blood to reach the heart muscle, bypassing blockages. It is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
Is it right for me?
It's considered for significant multi-vessel coronary artery disease or when other approaches are unsuitable. A cardiac team reviews your angiogram, symptoms and general health.
How it's done
- 1
Coronary angiography maps the blockages.
- 2
Under general anaesthesia, healthy vessels are prepared as grafts.
- 3
The grafts are connected to bypass the blocked areas.
- 4
You recover initially in a cardiac intensive care setting.
