Arrhythmia Ablation
Catheter-based procedure that targets the small area of heart tissue causing an abnormal rhythm and neutralises it with heat or cold energy. Used for many arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation. Usually a same-day or overnight stay.
Arrhythmia Ablation explained
Catheter ablation treats abnormal heart rhythms by neutralising the small area of tissue where the abnormal signals originate.
What it is
Thin catheters are guided to the heart through a vein. Once the abnormal area is mapped, energy (radiofrequency or cryoablation) is delivered to disable it.
Is it right for me?
It's considered for symptomatic arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter or supraventricular tachycardia, especially when medication is insufficient. Your cardiologist reviews your case.
How it's done
- 1
Detailed mapping identifies the arrhythmia source.
- 2
Catheters are guided to the heart under imaging.
- 3
Energy is applied to the target tissue.
- 4
The heart rhythm is monitored to confirm success.
