Angioplasty and Stent
Catheter-based procedure that opens narrowed coronary arteries with a balloon and places a stent to keep the artery open. Usually performed under local anaesthesia with mild sedation. Most patients go home the next day.
Angioplasty and Stent explained
Angioplasty with stenting reopens narrowed coronary arteries and keeps them open using a small mesh tube.
What it is
A thin catheter is guided from the wrist or groin to the narrowed artery. A balloon widens the vessel and a stent is deployed to hold it open.
Is it right for me?
It's considered for coronary artery narrowing causing symptoms or during a heart attack. Your cardiologist reviews the angiogram to confirm suitability.
How it's done
- 1
Coronary angiography identifies the target lesion.
- 2
A guidewire is passed through the narrowing.
- 3
A balloon dilates the artery and a stent is placed.
- 4
The catheter is removed and the entry site is closed.
