Autologous
Autologous transplantation uses your own stem cells, collected and frozen before high-dose treatment and returned to you afterwards to help your bone marrow recover. It is used in selected blood cancers and some solid tumours when the disease responds well to intensive therapy. You are cared for in dedicated transplant units with careful isolation, monitoring and supportive care during the recovery weeks that follow.
Autologous explained
An autologous transplant uses your own healthy stem cells, collected and stored beforehand, to restore your bone marrow after intensive treatment.
What is an autologous transplant?
In an autologous transplant, your own blood-forming stem cells are collected and stored in advance. After intensive treatment, your stored cells are returned to you through a drip to restore healthy bone marrow. Because the cells are your own, there's no need for a donor match.
Is it right for me?
It's considered for certain conditions when recommended by a haematology team and when enough of your own healthy cells can be collected. Specialists assess your diagnosis and overall health in detail before proceeding.
How it's done, step by step
- 1
Assessment & planning by the haematology team.
- 2
Cell collection: your stem cells are collected and stored safely.
- 3
Conditioning: you receive treatment to prepare your body.
- 4
Transplant: your stored cells are returned through a drip.
- 5
Engraftment & monitoring: you're closely supported as the cells re-establish.
